Lithuanian illustrators’ exhibition in Bangkok – a visiting card of Lithuania
Monday, 15 May, Bangkok, Thailand – President Dalia Grybauskaitė, on a working visit in Thailand, opened an exhibition of internationally known Lithuanian children’s book illustrators and invited everyone to visit Lithuania.
Mrs. Nualphan Lamsam, Honorary Consul in Thailand, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomats, businesspeople and members of the Lithuanian community attended the opening ceremony.
The exhibition was organized in view of the upcoming 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Thailand which will be commemorated next year. The exhibition contains 50 illustrations created by 11 contemporary Lithuanian artists, including Kęstutis Kasparavičius, Stasys Eidrigevičius, Laisvydė Šalčiūtė, Nomeda Marčėnaitė, and others.
According to the President, Lithuania and Thailand are far away from each other, but the language of culture brings us closer, and the distance disappears. The exhibition is part of Lithuanian heritage and modern culture that we respect, foster and share. It introduces Lithuania and reveals the way we think about children and books. It speaks about our world-view and opens up Lithuania to the world.
The exhibition has been opened in one of the largest shopping centers in Bangkok and later on it will be transferred to the Children’s Discovery Museum.
In Thailand, the President visited the Historic City of Ayutthaya – UNESCO World Heritage Site – and the Ayutthaya Historical Study Centre.
According to the President, more and more Lithuanians discover Thailand: as many as ten thousand Lithuanian tourists visited Thailand last year to explore its culture, history, nature and traditional cuisine.
The increasing flow of tourism is the best proof of enhanced relations between the two countries and friendship between the people of Lithuania and Thailand. According to the President, bilateral relations could be further promoted by visa-free travels granted by Thailand.
The President also visited the Arts and Crafts Center, established by the Royal family to reduce social exclusion. People from a lower socioeconomic background and the disabled work there and learn new skills. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindorn of Thailand and President Dalia Grybauskaitė place special focus on social safety and security.
