CANDLELIGHTS IN THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO DEFENDED LITHUANIA'S FREEDOM
To honour those who died January 13th, 1991 defending Lithuania's indepedence, institutions, schools, homes in Lithuania, Lithuanian embassies abroad and the Lithuanian diaspora joined the civil campaign Memory Lives Through Witnessing by lighting candles in the windows.
On 13th of January Lithuania marks the Day of Freedom Defenders. Fourteen people were killed and hundreds were injured during the attempt by the Soviet troops to overthrow Lithuania's legitimate authorities on the 13th of January, 1991. Although the Soviet troops managed to seize the TV Tower and the Lithuanian National Radio and Television building, they failed to take over the premises of the Supreme Council (The Reconstituent Seimas), as thousands of civilians were guarding the building.
The comprehensive list of the events, history facts, virtual and photo exhibitions and video story of the events can be found on the official page of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania.
