Lithuanian Embassy contributes to the advancement of women in China

The Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Beijing, together with the Embassies of Austria, Belgium, Finland, and Chinese public organization ‘Crossroads Center’, hold a workshop on the rights of women, on the 26th September 2014. During the workshop the diplomats of the European Union and other experts have shared the information and discussed with their colleagues from China their experiences on the implementation of the United Nations Convention on Abolition of discrimination against women. The People’s Republic of China will have to submit its next report under the Convention in 2015, same as Lithuania. The representatives of Chinese non-governmental organizations and other public figures have actively participated in the open discussion and a lot of attention has been given to the outstanding issues, such as the policy of family planning and its implementation in China. Mr Rytis Satkauskas, the Counsellor of the Republic of Lithuania, has highlighted the role of society stereotypes when dealing with the issue of discrimination of women, and the crucial importance of media and education in this respect. During the event, the work of the European Institute of Gender Equality, established in 2010, in Vilnius, Lithuania, was introduced to the audience. The work of the Institute for the evaluation of advancement in accordance with Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA), adopted in the Fourth Conference of the World for women issues in 1995, has been underlined.
