Prime Minister’s meeting with Vice-president of Samsung Electronics focuses on Lithuania’s market
After participating in the Boao Forum for Asia annual conference and meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang today, Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius discussed investment opportunities in Lithuania with Lee Jae-yong, vice president of Samsung Electronics.
“Lithuania is a reliable and growing market for foreign investment. The country’s GDP growth is one of the fastest in the European Union, and international ratings speak for themselves: the annual Doing Business report of World Bank rates Lithuania among the world’s top 20 countries with the most favourable conditions for starting a business”, noted Prime Minister Butkevičius at the meeting with vice president of Samsung Electronics Lee Jae-yong.
At the meeting it was also emphasised that Lithuania started the accession negotiations with the OECD. The Head of the Government said that this would enhance the Lithuania’s competitiveness in the international markets and the country’s economy would experience a more rapid growth.
The Prime Minister pointed out the most advanced Lithuanian sectors, such as the lasers for science and industry that occupy 10 percent of the global market, biotechnologies, furniture and food production. According to the Prime Minister, the reliability of investment in Lithuania is proven by the successful operation in our country of such companies as Nasdaq, SEB, Western Union, Barclays, Danske Bank, and others.
“In addition to that, the Lithuanian laser equipment is used by the most celebrated European, American and Asian universities, science laboratories and high-tech companies, such as NASA, CERN, Observatory of Hawaii, the University of Cambridge, General Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, LG and Samsung“, said the Head of the Government.
Vice president of Samsung Electronics Lee Jae-yong said that he is interested in the Lithuanian market and would like to develop cooperation in the areas of pharmacy, biomedicine and biotechnologies.
The Prime Minister extended an invitation to participate in the biggest regional conference of life sciences, Life Sciences Baltic, and to consider the investment opportunities in this area more in detail.
During the working visit in China Prime Minister Butkevičius also met with the President of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Jin Liqun. The president informed the Prime Minister that more and more European countries show interest in membership opportunities in the mentioned organization, as well as the USA and Canada. Jin Liqun stated that the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank would agree to discuss the accession opportunities of Lithuania that would strengthen the partnership between Europe and Asia in this area.
